Startup City Bangalore

This is more of a … look at the pictures .. they tell the story … post :)

We went to the much awaited (or rather publicized) startup city today. We reached around noon and found a lot of crowd there. The event looked like a trade fair and there were banners and balloons all over the place.

Startup City ...

The event was in Nimhans convention centre and the good thing was that there was tons of parking space available. Once inside, we found the place to be really crowded, which I guess was good for the companies showcasing there.

Open Coffee Club also had a booth there and I found Vaibhav and Amarinder evangelizing OCC. I think these guys are doing an awesome job of spreading the OCC and keeping the meets interesting.

Several OCC companies were also demoing their products/services there. For example LifeBlob

We also met Sameer and Nandhini of Madhouse (now SeventyMM) and had a good discussion with them on Indian startup scene. These guys have great experience building and selling a company and it was fun talking to them.

We did not attend any talks or discussions and spent most of the time catching up with other people. Overall I got more of a trade fair feeling out of Startup City. There were stalls of Amazon, Nokia and HSBC right at the entrance :) The event certainly did not feel like a real startup event. I am not sure how to describe that feel .. I guess it wasn’t boostrapper’s event (except for the OCC booth).

“I guess it wasn’t boostrapper’s event (except for the OCC booth).”

Prateek, there was also a Kickstart.in (http://kickstart.in) booth.

The session by Jinesh Varia, who is Evangelist of Amazon Web Services was more from marketing angle.

I then went to ACM talk by the same guy at Rotary Club, Lavelle Road in afternoon and it was more of tech talk on AWS.

Agree with you completely Prateek… on how it felt in there. There were 2 distributor/resellers there, who didn’t quite appear to be startups, also startup-definition seemed to include some folks who had more then 500 employees spread accross 3 continents, offices in 10 countries, and were “just-starting-office-in-India”,… then there were the sponsors.

Also, for several stalls, my expression of interest in their product / service got them confused about whether I was looking for a job with them, and they seemed to be bit more keen on the 2nd front, in explaining work culture ;-) .

Overall it was not so bad an experience… just a different kind. Met lot of known folks, saw lot of known faces, and met few new ones. I landed using this event as more of a networking opportunity than anything else, which actually served the purpose pretty well.

PS> Cool photographs, what kind is your (photography) equipment?

    cheers,
    Bani

Hi Prateek, Few months back i had visited your blog. Except few muziboo related posts i didnt find much articles. But, now it looks pretty different from the earlier version with well written posts. Good work. keep it up.

And about StartUp city, except few cool products it wasn’t much attractive (for me). I was there only for an hour. I too didn’t get a chance to attend any sessions.

Looks like I didn’t miss anything given the fact that there weren’t many startup demos/stalls. How were the talks? Again safe to skip ?
