Last month I finally bought an iPhone (3GS). So far I have absolutely loved using it and even though its a bit expensive I think it’s totally worth having. Here are a few things that I really like

Camera

The iPhone camera is only 3 MegaPixel but it takes great pictures. I have not played around with the video recording much but here is one shot that I took using the iPhone

<a href="http://twitpic.com/1pkzik"title="Share photos on twitter with Twitpic" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/twitpic.com');">

App Ecosystem

I downloaded a few apps and was blown away by the number of apps available on the platform. There is an app available for every need. Here are some of the apps that I use almost daily now

Twitter for iPhone

Google’s App (for muziboo mail, google reader)

Notes (comes bundled with iPhone)

Clock (comes bundled with iPhone. You can add clocks for different timezones and see them at once)

Safari (comes bundled)

Facebook

I also downloaded and tried out a few racing games. Even though I am not a gaming freak, I was very impressed by the games available on the iPhone. The responsive accelerometer makes most games on the iPhone a lot of fun.

SMS/Push Notifications

I liked the fact that you don’t have to unlock your iphone to view short sms and push notifications from apps like Facebook and Mail. It’s very handy and saves a lot of time if you are a heavy messaging user (who isn’t?)

The not so great things

To keep it fair, there are somethings I did not like about the iPhone.

Even though there is 16GB built in storage, you cannot use iPhone as a USB drive (something I could do with Nokia 5800)

Slide to answer call

Need to use iTunes to transfer music and videos

The not so great battery life (its better w/o wifi but still not as great)

Some apps which don’t change orientation, forcing me to type on the smaller keyboard (Gmail for example)

A common cable for usb and the charger, forcing you to buy an expensive accessory or unplug the cable from your computer everytime you wanna use the wall charger

Overall its a great phone and a great investment. I think the iOS4 update should make it an even better phone.

India’s first and fastest growing network of print and document shops.

India’s first branded retail chain that provides services of international standard.

A professional, board-managed company co-founded by experts from the document printing and the IT services industries.

I had used their service in Feb 2008 when they had just opened up a center near Jayadeva Hospital in Bangalore. We went to their store and got a card designed. Since customization costs about Rs 50 per half an hour of designer time, we picked one from the template, supplied our logo and got the card ready. We printed about 200 of these and paid Rs 300 (Rs 150 per 100 cards). We were told that soon they would be introducing the facility to reorder the same job by phone or website and a couple of months later we got a call telling us that they have introduced the facility.

Before leaving for proto.in, we wanted to get a lot of cards printed and we called up printo. The lady who picked up the call had no clue and told us that she would call us back and never called back (ofcourse). We called them again the next day and told them that we wanted to reorder our old card and they told us that the system automatically deletes files older than 3 months! Now no one ever told this to use before and I don’t even see why with the storage costs falling by the hour, a system should delete a file to free up a few MB. Remember this is not a picture of my cat uploaded to some free file sharing site. This is a file on which printo has already made money and have a good chance of making money again. Considering the storage costs on S3 are about 15 cents per GB, this file would cost printo a couple of paise a month to store. Atleast before deleting, their system can check and send an email asking the customer if they would like to replace the order.

That would be fairly easy if they had a freaking system in place. I went to their store and the lady started looking for my files. She went to a networked windows drive (yeah!) and then started looking for folders manually and tried searching for Muziboo Files. The records had no other indexing. They were not even using google desktop. After sometime she gave up and told me the same story of software deleting the files. I got mad at this point and the manager and another guy came over and told me how they delete the files for privacy concerns. So they keep the files for 3 months and then suddenly the privacy concern kicks in and they delete the file. They never ask the customers if they can save the file in the first place. After all this, I had to get the card redone again because there was no way to restore the file, wait for 2 hours and then get the cards printed. All the cards had smudged edges but thats another story.

I have a few questions to the printo management

The store is not cheaper than regular printing press. There are no processes that are helping in cutting costs or improving the convenience of the customer. How are you redefining the offline and online printing scene?

Regular printers keep the files for a long time and all I have to do is to call them up and they reprint my order. Why is printo so inefficient?

Why are people who pick the calls so clueless?

Sorry to sound like a broken record but with no processes in place where is the innovation. Your people can’t even find a file easily in one store. Leave apart integration between stores and the ability to reorder stuff online.

All in all I don’t see why printo is better than the printing press next door. They plan to start 250 stores by 2011. May be they should try to write some Software by then too that can help them manage stuff better and provide customers a better experience.

From what I understand, they basically pay you to receive ads on your mobile. Whether this is a neat idea or not is debatable and we will debate it later. What has really infuriated me is the fact that mGinger is actually spamming people by email to join their service. So they are basically trying to build a spam free mobile solution (you need to opt in to get ads) and spreading it by email spamming. Quite ironical.

The great thing about their spam is that they are not spamming all that blindly. They have acquired some database of users and their connections (not sure from where) and their invitations look like invitations for friends. I have verified from people that they never sent such invitations. There cannot be a bigger proof than the fact that I got an invitation from a friend who passed away last month (I can prove this if needed). This has seriously infuriated me and I think mGinger is generating massive negative PR by doing so. If well funded startups in the mobile space pull such cheap tricks to spread, I am not sure where the whole bazillion dollar indian mobile market is headed.

I recently came across flipkart.com, an online bookstore which as far as i know is the only online bookstore in India to offer discounts and free shipping (with no catch). I have not ordered from them yet as I already have a pile of books i very recently got and have not read yet but their collection looks good. Almost all volumes have discount and some even have upto 20% discount.

Their UI is refreshingly simple and the search is quite powerful which I think is very important for a website like this. Since they are only a month old, they do not have too many fancy features but I had a chat with the team and they are in the process of adding a lot of nice features. They however have must have features like “Search history” etc. They accept all major credit cards and are working on adding more payment gateways.

If you are considering buying a book in the near future, I would highly recommend using their services. Do let me know how was your experience.

Here is wishing the founding team best of luck for success!
